Hearts of Gold
Because they dare, students will excel. Follow their dreams. Fulfill their destinies. Better their world.
The lives of Drs. Angus and Jean Bruneau are tied inextricably to the development of Memorial University itself.
Dr. Bruneau was the founding dean of the Faculty of Engineering, leading the development of cooperative engineering programs and creating the Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering (C-CORE). He moved to industry and joined Newfoundland Power in 1974 where he oversaw its transformation into Fortis, while always maintaining close ties with Memorial. Dr. Jean Bruneau is a driving force in the volunteer community of Newfoundland and Labrador, offering over 30 years of service to multiple organizations.
For decades, the couple has given time, advice and financial support to Memorial. Their 2007 gift of over $1 million to the Angus Bruneau Student Leadership and Innovation Fund in Engineering -- the largest gift of its kind to Memorial at the time -- will help to change the lives of countless students.
“Memorial has always been a big part of my family’s life,” Dr. Bruneau said. “In addition to Jean’s honorary degree, and my own, all three of my sons earned their degrees here. My strongest wish for the future is that Memorial University and its students continue to thrive, grow and innovate.”
That wish is far more likely to be realized thanks to this heartfelt gesture from Drs. Angus and Jean Bruneau.
